Dye sublimation creates quality products

I've come across many people who have never heard of dye sublimation and/or don't know its capabilities, strong points, and weaknesses. Since this is what we do, I thought I'd take a minute to explain it.

Dye sublimation is simply the process of transferring an image to a product (generically called a substrate in the industry) by applying heat at about 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The image printed on the transfer paper using special ink is turned directly from a solid to a gas (sublimated) and is absorbed into the surface of the product. That is one of the key differences between this and screen printing. The image is not applied to the surface, it is "embedded" in the product. If you think of a screen printed shirt, you know that if you run your fingers over the shirt, you are able to feel the raised print of the design. If you do the same with a shirt that has been dye sublimated, you will not feel the design, because the ink has been absorbed into the fabric and has actually changed the color of the shirt in that area. This results in a product that is very durable and will not chip or fade, except in prolonged exposure to UV light.

Another strong point of dye sublimation is the photo-quality reproduction of images, designs, photos, and text. Color matching is not guaranteed, but we can get very close, giving you a product that will reproduce your photograph or design exactly.

One of the drawbacks of dye sublimation, in some cases, can be the price. It is a very high quality process, and the prices tend to be higher than screen printed products. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it means that dye sublimation may not be the perfect fit for your promotional campaign, depending on your budget.

Overall, dye sublimation is a very exciting process. It is fun to see the results coming off of the heat press, and very rewarding to hear customers who are impressed with their products.
